From the Grand Canyon we travelled to Flagstaff. It is a pretty little town to wander around in but we wanted to get out and explore the surrounding area so we decided on a day trip to visit a meteor crater and the Petrified Forest National Park. The meteor crater is located approximately 60km east of Flagstaff off interstate 40.

The crater was caused by a 50 metre wide meteor hitting the earth and resulted in a hole that is 1200 metres in diameter, 170 metres deep and rises 45 metres above the surrounding landscape. The crater is impressive to see especially because it is surrounded by the flat Arizona desert.
